A Fflam Never Flags!

OK, just had to get that out of the way. I haven't done anything here in ages, so I decided to dust up some old sketches and stick them up. These are three characters from Lloyd Alexander's "young adult" fantasy quintet often called The Prydain Chronicles. These were absolutely my favorite books in my (much maligned) teen years, and they still hold a dear place in my heart. The main character is Taran the assistant Pig Keeper. On his left is his faithful side kick, Gurgi, basically a bipedal dog that talks, and very much based on my Mom's dog, Ziggy. On his right is Fflewddur Fflam, Bard of the Harp [ping!]. If I ever figure out how to draw a harp, I may add that in.

Oh, and the atrocious abomination that was the eighties Disney animated film (when "loosely based" meant "with a few elements in common with") DID NOT HAPPEN.

It would be fascinating to watch you draw.

Um, about as fascinating as watching grass grow, I'm sure.
Plus I absolutely hate it when people watch me while I'm trying to concentrate on something... it brings out the meaner side of my nature (not a pretty thing).

Very interesting take on Gurgi. I don't think I've ever seen him fully clothed in any rendition. But I also think of him as doglike, in spite of the way most illustrations of him look monkeyish.

I like your Taran. Glad somebody else out there thinks of him as having long hair, because I keep getting flack for it.

You should definitely get Fflewddur a harp. A quick google search on Celtic harps should get you a decent reference.

With you all the way regarding the film. That's a very bitter subject with me.

About Gurgi - He behave like a big dog when he first appears, and I'm sure some mention is made of the distressing odor of wet wolf-hound.

I'll take your advice about the harp. My poor Fflam must feel lonely without it.

For some unexplainable reason, these books are so close to my heart, it's always a joy to meet another fan. :D

It is indeed a joy, and now a comfort, what with the author's recent passing.

Can I hope to see any more work from you in this area?

That's pretty much how I imagined Taran to look, although for some reason I always pictured Fflewddur looking like Lloyd Alexander himself. But that's me.
:iconwanderinggeomancer:
Interesting. I can't recall ever seeing what Lloyd Alexander looks like though.

"Lloyd Alexander's fantasy QUARTET?" There are five! It's a pity if you haven't read the last one - 'The High King'.
Anyway: Taran totally rocks. This is exactly as I imagined him! Gurgi is interresting, and I like your take. For some reason, it never occured to me that Fflewddur might have a beard. But it looks nice.

It's so nice to see another fan around - we're so few and far between!

Oops, did I say quartet? Better fix that.

Thank you for catching that and thank you very much for your compliments.

It is always sweet to see another fan of the series.
